OMRI-LISTED CARBON –
DERIVED FROM: SOFTWOOD BIOCHAR
Think of a forest that has never been logged or touched before. That soil would be soft and fluffy, dark in color, loamy in appearance, and have a very rich smell. You’d be able to almost stick your hand right into it. This is a topsoil that is heavy in Carbon and is just cranking with biology, organic matter, fungi, bacteria, earthworms, etc. When we break the Carbon cycle of the soil with high salts, synthetics, and deep-till plowing, we lose that type of soil on our farmland, and we are left with soil taken over by salts. High salt soils are what you would consider ‘compacted soil.’ It gets slimy when it rains, drains poorly, has deep cracks when it dries out, and throws giant melon-sized clods up when plowed. This type of soil is often plowed and left bare before Spring planting because after it goes through a couple of good freezes/frosts, it is much easier to work. When we bring back the Carbon cycle, we can correct this type of soil.
Topsoil should have extremely high Carbon content and be loaded with biology. Most topsoil on farms today is high in Magnesium, Potassium, Na Sodium, and Chlorides. When the Carbon cycle is broken, and the salts are not magnetically regulated, they are free to diffuse throughout the soil, disrupting the balance of the soil.
We recommend biochar to farmers who have high salt soils so the Carbon can work on degrading the excess salts and restore the missing Carbon cycle of the soil. Earthworms and the microbe biology living in healthy topsoil break down the fodder, leaves, etc., and release the Carbon inside them back into the soil. In the process of digesting and breaking down these things, they are also secreting anionic CaCO3 [negatively charged Calcium Carbonate] through their glands, giving you available Calcium properties in the soil as well. What is special about ‘earthworm Calcium’ is that it is negatively charged, making it available. When we bring the Carbon cycle back to the soil by stopping synthetics and deep till plowing and degrading the excess salts, we create an ecosystem for dormant earthworm eggs to hatch.
Carbon in the form of biochar can be an expensive soil input. We often make the recommendation to put out what the remainder of the farm’s budget can afford. It has been studied that 10 tons of biochar per acre start to restore the Carbon cycle. We recommend an average of 2,000-3,000 lbs as too much Carbon too quickly can have an adverse reaction, especially on Nitrogen. We do not solely rely on biochar to do this. Aragonite [our negatively charged Calcium of choice] is 12-15% Carbon. We also rely on the earthworms to do the job they were designed to do once they come out of dormancy after re-establishing the environment needed to thrive.
